PTE stands for Pearson Test of English, a computer-based test to check the English proficiency of non-native speakers. It was designed in 2009 by the Graduate Management Admission Council. It is the unit of PLC (Pearson Language Group). The immigration authorities of Australia, the UK, and New Zealand easily accept this language test for Study Visa applications.
The significant difference between PTE Academic and General is the purpose of taking the test. If the person wants to Study in English-speaking countries, they need PTE Academic, and PTE General is taken by applicants who want to move to a foreign country for Work or Residency.

PTE is mainly designed for those who want to study, work or have permanent residency in English-speaking countries. More than 3000 universities/Colleges around the world trust the PTE scores. The Universities and Colleges of Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand majorly accept this test. They have a network of more than 400 test centers across 117 countries.
The PTE has no academic requirements to appear, but the applicant must have a valid passport and a minimum of 16 years. Also, the minimum requirement of a PTE score varies based on the selected University and program.
PTE Academic Test contains 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. However, it is divided into three parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening. The Speaking & Writing part runs for 54-67 minutes and has multiple kinds of questions to test your English speaking and writing skills. The Reading goes on for 29-30 minutes, and you have to answer questions from 5 different question types. The Listening part is for 30-43 minutes and has 8 types of questions to test your English listening skills using Audio and Video clips. The total duration of the exam is 3 hours, including a break of 10 minutes during the test.
The test fee of PTE Academic in India is ₹15,900, including all taxes. After registering on the PearsonPTE website, you have to choose the timeslot and test center to book your test. You have to make an online payment through acceptable payment methods such as Debit/Credit Cards or Fee Vouchers. The Fee Vouchers are generally cheaper and better than Online payment methods.
The test-taker has to create a myPTE account on the PearsonPTE website and book the exam from there. You should be careful while filling out the applicant details and make sure it matches your passport before final submission. In case of any mistake, you will not be allowed to sit in the exam and not be eligible for a refund either.
Pearson India conducts the PTE Academic test about 6 to 8 times a month, with 35 testing centers in India. The test-taker can choose the date, time, and center to take the PTE test at their convenience. But it is recommended to book your test slot in advance due to limited availability at some test centers and avoid the last-minute rush. Despite this you, you can reschedule or cancel your test in case of a medical emergency.
The Pearson PTE score releases within 2 working days after the test on your myPTE account at the PearsonPTE website, which you had created to book your test. You will also get an Email and SMS when your result is available. The validity of test scores is 2 years. However, some organizations may request more recent test scores.
Furthermore, the overall score range of the PTE Test is 0 - 90, where each section score also lies between 0-90. Applicants will receive a score for each module and an overall PTE score. Some people assume that the average of all section scores is equivalent to the overall score, but this is not true. The overall score is calculated based on section scores using a hidden algorithm.
Starting 10th August 2023, the IRCC Canada has officially accepted the PTE scores and the other 3 English Language Proficiency Exams. The overall score should be more than 60 to be eligible for the Study Visa under SDS program. There is no cap on the minimum score in individual modules.
