The acronym CEFR stands for Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which divides Language Proficiency into six levels (C2, C1, B2, B1, A2, and A1) for most of the major languages spoken globally. The Council of Europe upholds the CEFR standards to increase the transparency of language comparison schemes.
The IELTS Proficiency Exam is comparable to the CEFR for English Language Proficiency. For example, a score of 5.5 to 6.5 in IELTS is equivalent to B2 Level on the CEFR Scale, and a score of 8.5 - 9.0 is comparable to C2 Level. Most Universities require at least a B2 Level for admission; however, Immigration authorities require at least a C1 Level for PR Skilled programs.
