Students will excel because of hands-on learning opportunities, but gain even more confidence when they work side-by-side with accounting professionals for sixteen weeks during tax season. Students will set themselves up for success with this unique blend of classroom learning and work experience.
They will develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of accounting principles and make themselves attractive prospects for any business or accounting firm. Students will work towards completion of the prerequisites for the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) accounting designation administered by the Chartered Professional Accountants.
They will also help organizations and individuals manage their finances and plan for their future. This career path takes students' interests in the business world and combines it with their excellent communication skills, ability to convey complex ideas in a simple manner and desire to uphold ethics. Students will learn how to advance in this demanding—and rewarding—career.
Through a combination of required and optional courses, learn various skills needed to succeed in the accounting field. Higher-level courses enhance critical thinking skills within a business context. A four-month, paid co-operative work placement in rural Manitoba during tax season gives students real-world experience they can take with them after graduation. The four-month co-op work placement may be in a smaller community outside of Brandon. Students may be required to relocate for their co-op work experience placements and travel is necessary.
Students will find opportunities in public accounting firms, banks, trust companies, accounting and internal auditing departments, industrial firms, federal, provincial or municipal offices, school divisions, parochial schools, tribal councils, non-profit organizations and health care institutions, as well as in owner-managed businesses as business/office managers.
