Passionate about law and justice and want to help at-risk and high-risk client groups in both community and institutional settings, the Community and Justice Services program is the path to an exciting career. This program blends corrections theory with practical experiences building students skills and confidence. Every semester Cambrian College brings students to the field or the field experts to the students with numerous guest speakers currently employed in the field who will share their tips, stories, and an outstanding breadth of knowledge. Cambrian College's experienced and dedicated faculty are practiced in experiential, applied, service, and student as partner learning.
Students will acquire public safety skills and learn to secure staff and clients in institutional, residential, community correction and group home settings. Students will learn how to help clients across the continuum of the justice system with an emphasis on corrections, intervention in a trauma informed lens, and reintegration. Students will train in the legal aspects of crime and behaviour, security measures and techniques including interviewing and intervention skills for young offenders, adult offenders and victims. Students will identify and examine issues of diversity and inclusivity related to unique populations in community and justice services and corrections. Understand issues related to female and Indigenous offenders, addiction, group dynamics, behaviour management and victims within the criminal justice system.
