Mechanical engineering combines scientific principles, mathematics, and realisation to design, develop and implement innovative solutions to contemporary problems. This program will enhance students' skills and provide them with advanced subject knowledge to accelerate their engineering careers.
From designing replacement hip joints and hospital MRI scanners, to developing autonomous vehicles and monitoring the structural health of offshore windfarms, mechanical engineering contributes greatly to contemporary life and is central to the innovation carried out in many industries.
Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the MSc Advanced Mechanical Engineering program comprises of advanced topics in mechanical engineering and industry linked project work. Students will benefit from the teaching of some of the world’s experts in their fields, a state-of-the-art working environment, and networking opportunities to enhance career prospects.
Over the course of the year, students will study six taught modules and undertake a major individual project. These will provide students with advanced knowledge while allowing them to develop their specialist skills, which will enable them to take advantage of the many senior engineering and technology employment opportunities available at home and abroad. Students will become familiar with stress analysis, finite element analyses and modelling; renewables including wind, tidal and hydro-power; mechanisms and mechanical design; control and self-learning systems; systems analysis, advanced materials and manufacturing, application of artificial intelligence in engineering, among other topics. At the same time, students will develop capabilities that are highly valued by employers more generally, such as problem-solving, analytical skills and team-working abilities.
A major element of the program is a dissertation project during which students will undertake independent research and receive one-to-one supervision from an academic specialist, and possibly be working with one of Lancaster's industry partners. During this project, students will bring together everything that they have learnt and apply it to an advanced individual project. This will allow them to practise their skills and demonstrate their professional competences, thereby improving their employability.

THE (Times Higher Education) has been providing trusted performance data on universities for students and their families, academics, university leaders, governments and industry, since 2004. We create university rankings to assess university performance on the global stage and to provide a resource for readers to understand the different missions and successes of higher education institutions.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and updated on an annual basis
The "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. CSIC is among the first basic research organizations in Europe. The CSIC consisted in 2006 of 126 centers and institutes distributed throughout Spain.
