The University of Essex MPhil in Applied Psychology offers students a unique opportunity to undertake research in an applied psychological context. Given the variety of applications of psychological research the contexts within which their research could be conducted include: schools, hospitals, outdoor activities, community groups, occupational settings etc. Students will be offered opportunities to access the Masters level research methods modules to provide a sound foundation of specific research knowledge and skills. In addition, students will have access to the University’s Proficio research training scheme which allows them to choose training programmes that meet the requirements of their own research topics and methodologies.
Within the School of Health and Social Care, Essex has a number of Chartered Psychologists who are also research supervisors. This provides students with the clinical awareness and guidance alongside the scientific rigour necessary to undertake such a MPhil. Where possible they offer two supervisors to ensure all students' supervision requirements are met. The supervisor(s) will guide students in developing their research plans and support in self-directed learning. Students will also have two supervisory panels a year which will allow their progress to be monitored in a more formal manner.
Essex's Graduates have gone on to take up posts in both clinical and management positions in Trusts, hospitals and care organizations as well as in local and county councils.
