Within the University of Essex multidisciplinary School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences, students offer research supervision in all areas of staff expertise in sports and exercise sciences and related areas.
As a research student at Essex, students will work at the heart of Essex's internationally acknowledged and well-connected research community. The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences offers an environment with an excellent reputation for research and teaching.
Essex's facilities include a wide range of ergometers and treadmills, stand alone and portable gas analysers, force plates, isokinetic dynamometers, a Vicon motion capture system, electronic timing gates, full blood gas analysers, (including pulse and co-oximeters), and a variety of EMG systems. It is also possible to study non-invasive measurements of brain function within the school and via collaborations with the cognitive neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Psychology. Methods include EEG, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).
Within Essex's School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences, students will be allocated a supervisor whose role it is to guide them through the different stages of their research degree. In some cases, students may have joint supervision by two members of staff. The support provided by the supervisor is a key feature of the student research experience and students will have regular one-to-one meetings to discuss progress on their research. Initially, the supervisor will help students develop their research topic and plan.
Essex's graduates go on to a range of careers both in research and development, and in sales. Other careers include work in industry or teaching in schools and colleges.
