The BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering course focuses on vehicle design, taking into account performance, consumer demand, safety and sustainability. Students will use all the latest industry tools and techniques, and take specialist classes in vehicle structures, engine performance, aerodynamics, materials and manufacturing strategies. This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is the first step towards chartered engineer status.
Learners will gain skills in commercial engineering software used in the industry, such as CATIA (a computer-aided design package), as well as finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics packages. There is also the opportunity to be involved with the Class 200 Formula Student car, where students will work on developing the previous year's Formula Student entry.
On this undergraduate course, students also have the option of taking an integrated one-year professional placement, or they can take the opportunity to study part of their degree abroad through student exchange programmes with other universities in the EU, USA or Canada. Previous students have completed work placement year at companies including Bentley Motors, Rolls Royce Cars and Triumph Motorcycles.
Graduates’ employment prospects are excellent. Students can expect to be employed in design, manufacturing or testing in one of the major automotive companies in the UK or internationally. Recent Automotive Engineering graduates have gone on to work at organizations including JCB, Nissan, Ford Motor Company, Nissan Technical Centre Europe, Jaguar Land Rover and McLaren Automotive.
