The University of Manitoba's theatre program is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a strength of the theatre program.
The University of Manitoba provides instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. The program provides excellent preparation for professional acting and technical training, while also offering a particular focus on new play development and directing.
Students will gain skills such as: comprehensive knowledge of theatre production techniques, an understanding of the techniques and procedures of play and screenwriting, the ability to analyze the form and content of theatre productions and the ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
Many of the University of Manitoba's theatre graduates have gone on to pursue professional careers in theatre, opera and film, with or without further study. Other students have pursued graduate studies or have taken the skills of theatre and applied them in careers as diverse as education, advertising, media, law, business, politics, psychology, fine arts and design.
A unique affiliation with Prairie Theatre Exchange (PTE) as an accredited teaching institute allows students to take practical courses taught by theatre professionals at PTE for credit.
Performance, production and interpretation are learned in the state-of-the-art John J. Conklin Theatre. Students have access to set, prop and costume shops in the Gail Asper Performing Arts Hall along with rehearsal spaces, a theatre control room, recording studio and Media Lab.
