This is a potential research degree area, subject to the approval of Abertay University.
Immersive experiences at Abertay covers a wide range of applied and theoretical research.
New and emerging immersive technologies present the most significant disruption to the wider creative industries since the advent of the world wide web in the 1990s. The opportunities for cutting edge research and innovation utilising platforms such as AR, VR and XR are vast, and research students working in this area have the potential to generate real impact on emerging technologies, production processes and audiences. At Abertay, students will be supported to conduct this research by Abertay's world-leading expertise in computer games education, their connections with key industry partners, such as Microsoft and Sony, and their specialist immersive and game development facilities.
The research at Abertay is inherently cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary, which is of particular importance for research in immersive experiences. They are the lead partner for InGAME: Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise, an AHRC-funded R&D centre for Dundee’s games cluster. Postgraduate students at the University will have access to research and development opportunities, as well as contact with professionals working within the games industry.
Undertaking a research degree in immersive experiences and technologies at Abertay will prepare students for a career not only in academia but also within wider society, including but not limited to the creative industries that they will have the opportunity to network and collaborate with.
Postgraduate research students will carry out an original, independent research and/or practice-based project, whilst being guided and supported by a team of expert academic supervisors. As students do this, they will benefit from an extensive programme of researcher development tailored to their background, needs and future ambitions. This will in turn help students develop the skills required to deliver research excellence.
The student's progress will be monitored throughout the year and via an annual review. The final assessment is by examination of a submitted thesis and viva voce (oral examination). With the help of the student's supervisors, they will be encouraged to publish their research during and after their studies. The award of Master of Science by Research (MSc by Research) demonstrates a practical ability to undertake research studies, a systematic understanding of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems and/or the application of original thought.
