Psychologists study the brain, behaviour, and mental processes. Psychology is an ideal filed of study for people who wonder why people act the way they do, or how they might help people change their thoughts and behaviours for the better.
At Acadia, students are taught how to answer their own questions about human behaviour and not just what others have learned about psychology. Students will have the opportunity to do hands-on psychological research early in their studies. Class limits of 25 for laboratory courses and 20 for upper-year seminar courses allow students to consider issues in depth, in a small group atmosphere. Acadia University's intimate program size allows students to get to know faculty members and fellow students well.
Students can pursue either a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology. The entrance requirements and the requirements for the major are identical for both, but students have the flexibility to select courses outside their major that are best-suited to their interests and career goals. Students can do a minor, or (if desired) a second major, in almost any other discipline.
Acadia offers a Neuroscience Option, focusing on the study of the nervous system, and an Applied Option, focusing on the effective management of human behaviour. These options involve pursuing a selection of targeted upper-year courses in these areas, which can provide solid preparation for careers in the health sciences, and in applied psychology fields such as clinical psychology and organizational counselling.
