Loughborough's MSc material science is designed to meet the requirements of industry, where qualified materials scientists and engineers are highly sought after. This challenging interdisciplinary programme spans the major classes of engineering materials essential to advanced modern high technology industries. The specialist knowledge gained can be applied to a wide range of industrial sectors including aerospace, automotive, power generation and distribution, IT, manufacturing and consumer goods amongst many others.
The master's in material science encompasses all aspects of materials: their selection, manufacture, testing, use and applications, as well as environmental impact both during production and at the end of life. On successful completion of the programme students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: (1) the underlying principles for the relationship between properties of materials and their composition and microstructure, with a greater or lesser knowledge of specific individual materials classes or properties depending on modules studied; (2) the synthesis and production of materials and the underlying principles for the relationship between this and their subsequent properties, with a greater or lesser knowledge of specific individual materials classes or properties, depending on modules studied; and (3) characterisation techniques: the underpinning concepts and practical use of a range of characterisation techniques, with a greater or lesser knowledge of specific techniques depending on modules studied.
The programme is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), allowing students. to progress towards professional chartered status (CEng) after a period of relevant graduate-level employment.
