The University of Essex's research engages with debates about the meaning of justice in the UK and beyond. Essex's staff have worked and continue to with the United Nations, governments, human rights organizations and corporations across the globe. Students have an excellent record of winning major research grants from funding bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Nuffield Foundation and the Leverhulme Trust.
Former students have gone on to work in legal practice, commerce and industry, the non-governmental organization sector and academia, including the academic community in the School of Law at Essex.
Within Essex's School of Law, students will be allocated a supervisor whose role is to guide them through the different stages of their research degree. In some cases, students may have joint supervision by two members of the staff. The support provided by the supervisor is a key feature of the student research experience and students will have regular one-to-one meetings to discuss progress on their research. Initially, the supervisor will help students develop their research topic and plan.
Essex's School of Law graduates have gone on to a wide variety of careers in international and intergovernmental organizations or employment with governments across the world, in commerce and banking, in non-governmental organizations and, as might be expected, in the legal profession and the judiciary.
Essex's large community of graduates regularly inform current postgraduates of opportunities in their organizations and businesses.
