For those who are curious about financial matters within companies or want to kick-start their career with professional accreditations before they've even left university, then BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance is the course for them.
This degree course offers exemptions from a range of accounting bodies including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
In the first year, students will learn the principles of accounting and the basic mix of knowledge and skills they would require for a successful career in accounting. They'll explore financial information within companies and corporations and learn to analyze it. There is a dedicated module focusing on professional skills, such as communication and IT-literacy. Learners will investigate the different sides of business and where their role as an accountant sits within these.
In the second year, students' accounting knowledge and skill will be developed and so will their employability. They’ll focus on financial reporting, management accounting and financial management. They’ll also learn methods of enquiry and problem solving to ensure they are ready to go out into the real world. This will give them an advantage when they start working.
In the final year, students will build on the foundation they have established in their first and second years but will also challenge the knowledge they have gained in those previous years so that they can influence change in their future career. Students will take modules on advanced financial reporting and management accounting. They’ll also have the chance to pick from options such as research methods, taxation, Islamic finance and banking or information systems.
Between the second and third year, students can do an entire year abroad at one of the partner universities based in America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. That means plenty of places for learners to go and explore. Students can also do a year’s work placement abroad or in the UK.
