Fashion Design at University of Hertfordshire at Main

Fashion impacts upon all aspects of our lives and shapes our appreciation and understanding of the world around us. BA (Hons) Fashion Design offers a commercially informed, creative and innovative design experience for tomorrow’s generation of fashion professionals. 

In the first year, students will learn core design and production skills. They'll practice hand rendering techniques to produce technical drawings. Students will visualize their designs with 2D and 3D technology and also become competent in fitting and pattern cutting. Other than this, learners will be taught how different fabrics behave and the best way to construct garments. Students will explore the history of art and design. They'll also develop photographic, presentation and portfolio skills which is the first step on their journey to create a professional design portfolio.  

In the second year, students will improve their technical design skills. Get stuck into sketching, drawing and illustrating. Students will be taught new ways to construct clothes. Get creative on a deeper level. Learners can develop their own visual identity and design signature. Professionals will teach fashion communication techniques. Other topics include branding and promotion in print and social media. Students will be set for ‘live’ assignments from the University's industry partners where they'll design functional and commercially viable fashion and design for real people, real shapes, real sizes. 

In the third year,  learners will produce their contemporary collection or equivalent. They'll embrace traditional, new and emerging technologies to produce unique designs, and work with a greater level of independence to create a professional portfolio. Students will be taught how to communicate a visual identity, ways to develop their brand and produce marketing and promotional material. Moreover, learners will produce a critical essay on a topic of their choice and their research will inform their concept. 

Interestingly, students could enter their collection in the prestigious Graduate Fashion Week held at the Truman Brewery in London. This is their chance to prove they’ve got what it takes. Moreover, between the second and final year, students will have the option to study abroad or do a work placement for a year. This will not only give them an amazing experience to talk about, but also boost their cv.
